Baltic Weather!!

Went over to the Headland today to try and see some of the gulls which are hanging around the fish quay but the gates were closed so we could only view from the town wall. We did manage to catch sight of the Little Gull and what we believe to be the Kumleins Gull but if not maybe someone can put us right. We also spotted on the beach what we believe to be a Grey Plover which was a very obliging bird indeed. Kept having fights with the Ringed Plover which was hanging around with it. Off to Holy Island tomorrow so hope we have a good day and am off school all next week so hope to get a few different birds to cheese Mick off.

Bewick Swans

Went across to Scaling Dam today to catch up with the Bewick and Whooper Swans there. Also saw a Bar Headed Goose which flew in with a large flock of Greylag and White Fronted mid afternoon. Also added Red Grouse and Brambling at Lockwood Beck to our year list today. Had 5 Goosander in Ropner Park, Stockton yesterday.

A Hoot of a Weekend!!

What a lovely day yesterday was, frosty, cold with beautiful blue sky. We managed to see a Short Eared Owl hunting near Greatham Creek and then today we found a Long Eared Owl at roost on Saltholme reserve. We then decided on the way home to try and find a Little Owl which we did on the road between Redmarshall and Bishopton although it was a stones throw outside the Cleveland boundary. Other birds seen yesterday were Water Rail and White Fronted Goose.

At one point the Owl attacked a Kestrel to try and steal its prey.

Long Tailed Duck at Last.

Spent the afternoon at South Gare trying to locate the Long Tailed Duck which had been reported there earlier in the week. Thanks to Bert we managed to see one in the bay. Later in the afternoon a second bird flew in to join it. Also there on our arrival was a large flock of over 50 Snow Bunting but we failed to locate them later in the day. There were good numbers of Knot, Turnstone and Oystercatcher along with Purple Sandpiper a fly over of a small group of Sanderling and at least 5 Bar Tailed Godwit. A Guillemot became beached on the breakwater and late in the afternoon a Merlin landed on the beach before flying off. All in all a very pleasant afternoon although a little cold in the wind.

A New Year begins.

Well we didn't get out very early on New Year's Day but we went out about 1pm and decided to see how many birds we could locate within a couple of hours. We managed 71 in 2 and a half hours after visiting Crookfoot Reservoir, The Headland and Cowpen Bewley. The female Smew was still at Crookfoot and the Ring Necked Duck at Cowpen Bewley although it was dusk and it was fast asleep. It was good fun and can't wait for the next full, decent weather day off to try and see how many birds we can get in Cleveland in a day. Roll on the weekend, feel like I have been back at school for weeks instead of days!

As horse-riding was cancelled and I was not feeling too good I decided to go out for an hour and get some fresh air. I went up to the Headland to see if the Slavonian Grebe was still there and sure enough it was along with quite a few other birdwatchers. It was giving excellent views feeding along the waters edge for quite a while before moving further out to feed. It was very cold though so I did not spend too long there before coming home to watch more Christmas films and make some mince pies.

Well we can't believe it is so long since we last posted anything. However we managed to venture out on the guided walk along Greatham Creek this morning to find a Black Necked Grebe. We also had excellent views of a fly past Peregrine which proceeded to land on one of the towers a across from Seal Sands. There were also good numbers of Grey Plover along with Black and Bar Tailed Godwits and Mergansers.

There were good numbers of Fieldfare at Saltholme.

And at the Headland there were large numbers of porpoise, the most we have seen there of late.

A Favourite - Grey Phalarope

Having spent the morning horse riding we managed to catch up with the Grey Phalarope late afternoon at the headland. It showed very well for us as we walked along the pier and although the sun was going down we did manage to get a few reasonable shots before it flew off across the bay. We called in at Crookfoot Reservoir prior to going to the headland and saw Bean, White Fronted and Pink Footed Geese along with the Smew, although all distant.

Well the day dawned and seemed rather dull and miserable but we headed off with our picnic to South Gare to meet anyone who was prepared to brave the inclement weather and see what was around. We were surprised to find that about 15 brave souls turned out with us and by the end of the morning we were probably all glad we had come. We had a great morning starting off at the cars with Black Guillemot, Red Throated Divers and Merlin and Hen Harrier. A short walk on the the shoreline produced a Goldcrest and shortly after an obliging Woodcock flew through. A Reed Bunting and a Lesser Redpoll were by the Gully and then we had excellent sightings of a Short Eared Owl. 3 Twite obliged later in the morning along with the Hen Harrier again. It was good to spend the morning with a good bunch of folk and meet some new faces and together we managed to find quite a few birds. A good day was had by all even though we dipped out on the Humes and Black Redstart. We stayed on well into the afternoon and managed to get further sightings of the Hen Harrier as it quartered the beach before returning to the dunes.

Went to South Gare to see the Humes Yellow Browed Warbler just in case it has disappeared by the time we visit tomorrow to lead a guided walk around the gare. If the last time we lead a guided walk is anything to go by then it will absolutely pour down, everyone will get soaked and we will see virtually nothing. But hey ho it is all part of the fun and hopefully it wont be like that and the weather will be good and we will see all sorts. May take some coffee for everyone just in case. Will let you know tomorrow night. Anyway back to today, we did see the warbler and good views at that and also three Black Redstarts in the same vicinity. Also around were some Red Throated Divers, guillemots and a juv. Gannet.

Not a lot of birds about today in the beautiful sunshine but we did see a Bat. We were up at Crookfoot Reservoir when we noticed something being chased by a Gull. We were quite surprised to see that it was some sort of Bat. It flew around the whole time we were there, on one occassion being mobbed by two pied wagtails. It seemed to be pretty large and certainly did get around pretty quickly.

From there we went over to the Headland where we saw this ringed Purple Sandpiper on the beach with a further 47 on the wall of the pier.

We decided to go over the moors for a run out then on to Scaling Dam and then over to Helmsley but did not get any further than Sleddale. We parked on the roadside approaching the Chevrons and had excellent view of the Harrier and Rough Legged Buzzards. The Grouse definately didn't like the Harrier and their flight was a good indication of its whereabouts on the moor. We also had good views of a Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Had an enjoyable day out to Leighton Moss on Sunday with the local bird group but unfortunately it was fairly quiet and we did not manage to get many good photos. The past few days this week we have spent around the local area seeing peregrine, short eared owl and a good selection of waders including a couple of Grey Plover. Hoping the weather stays reasonable so we can get out and about a bit more.

2nd Lifer in a week - Pallid Harrier

Managed to get good views of the Pallid Harrier at Dormans Pool today. There were lots of folk there today and would think it will be even busier tomorrow so if you have not yet been I would get there early, especially as the weather forcast is stating 'full sun' for most of the day.

Just thought we would add a few of Yarm Fair last night, went for a stroll through, bit of a tradition really, something you just have to do. A bit like going to Northallerton to see the Christmas lights being turned on which won't be that many weeks away!!!!

It probably is if the weather forcast for this week is right, with snow on the cards in the North of Scotland. I understand the first Waxwing is in the country already.

I spent the day on my own again as Mick was at work again, although I shouldn't complain as he probably soon won't have a job to go to. Went to see the Glossy Ibis again and tried my hardest to find a Yellow Browed Warbler but failed miserably. I did however come across a Woodcock which gave me a fright as it flew out of some bushes along the Zincs works road. The Lapwings looked lovely with the sun shining on their feathers.

I say for me as poor Mick was at work all day and could not get to see the Glossy Ibis which turned up at Saltholme today. I had not long been at Crookfoot Reservoir when I received a call to say the bird was at Saltholme so made a sharp exit down there. The bird was showing well behind the firestation and actually flew a shortdistance allowing for some flight shots as well. There were also four Snow Goose on the reserve too.

Went over the moors at the weekend and paid a visit to Scaling Dam to see if the Red Breasted Goose was still around. The weather was not too good and the light was quite poor so not good for photographs, although we did manage some record shots. It was nice to see a couple of Whooper Swans and also some female Goldeneye along with a Wood Duck.

Had a run around the local area again today in phenominal temperatures, hard to believe it is 1st October.

The Pectoral Sandpiper showed well outside the hide at Saltholme along with a Ruff. Stopped at Newburn around tea time to eat our sanies and enjoy the breeze when a white leucistic knot flew in. There were plenty of other waders there too. A group of Sandwich Tern were fishing just off the tideline, occassionally landing on the beach. We then went over to the Headland where there were quite a few Red Throated Diver on the sea.

We decided to have a run up the coast this afternoon to see if we could locate one of the birds off my list being the American Golden Plover and at the same time the Bonarparte's Gull at Whitburn. It was quite windy today but very warm, so much so that the ice-cream we bought in the car park upon our arrival was melting before we could eat it. We walked along the coastal footpath and one of the first birds we saw was the Bonarparte's Gull sitting on the water below the footpath with a group of Black Headed Gulls. We walked on and managed to find a large flock of Golden Plover in a field further along the footpath but were unable to locate the bird we were looking for. We will have to try again another day.

A visit to South Gare

As it was my last day off school today and I had been frantically trying to do all the jobs I had not done over the past six weeks in one day when Mick came home from work I decided to take a break and we went for a visit to South Gare to see if anything was about.

It was quite a nice evening although a little breezy and there were lots of people fishing on the breakwater when suddently an Arctic Skua turned up out of nowhere and started chasing the few gulls that were around. Also on the water were at least 55 Guillemots and some were quite close in on the high tide. On the shore there were lots of Dunlin and Ringed Plover, more than I have seen in a long time together with Sanderling, Knot and at least 4 Bar Tailed Godwit along with 1 Curlew Sandpiper that we could see and 2 Sandwich Tern. On the wall near the old jetty were over 100 Turnstone sheltering from the breeze.

We have just returned from our annual visit to Mull. The weather was mainly good with more sunny days than rainy and then it was usually just heavy showers and it was amazing how you could find somewhere on the island that was better weather then elsewhere. The worst day was when we had hired bikes to ride along Loch Frisa and 20 mins into the journey the heavens opened and we got absolutely soaked for about 20 mins and then the rain stopped and it was fine for the rest of the day, typical!! We did however remove the by now ten ton fleece tops and carried on regardless and actually enjoyed the ride. We saw all the usual birds however the most noticable sightings this time were the amount of Hen Harriers we had and the number of sites we saw them on a regular basis. We also saw a Knot which was quite unusual there and at least 7 Black Tailed Godwit. We also had the best photo opportunity for Sea Eagle this time whilst out walking near the coast. All in all a very enjoyable time once again.

Saw this Sea Eagle fly past whilst I was washing up and we managed to run out and get this photo whilst at the cottage in the glen.

And most mornings when we scanned the view from the cottage on the shore we would see a Sea Eagle sitting on the rocks or otters swimming in the sea or porpoise rising to the surface or if we were lucky all three.

The day we went to Iona it was like being in the Med. it was beautiful.

It was good to find some Black Tailed Godwits and a Whimbrel.

We went for a walk around Saltholme and then onto Greatham Creek and to Seal Sands hide early evening. Had excellent views of a Ruff and Snipe at Saltholme and could not believe how many Redshank were on Seal Sands from the hide along with large numbers of Curlew and Oystercatcher, a few Dunlin and 1 Grey Plover.

Been looking out for the Holly Blue again in the garden for the past week or so and finally saw one this morning. Followed it around from one side of the garden fence to the other before finally getting a couple of half decent photos feeding on the ivy. I think this is one of my favourite butterflies which until a couple of years ago had never seen in our garden before. We even had a speckled wood yesterday on the pyracantha.
Later in the day a trip over the moors gave us brief views of a cuckoo.

At last some decent weather for the poor butterflies. Plenty around in our local area yesterday as we took a walk along Hardwick Dene looking for the White Letter Hairstreaks but alas did not locate any. We did however manage to see Comma, Holly and Common Blue, Specked Wood, Small Heath and Skipper and a Red Admiral. Today we went back to Smardale Gill and saw Scotch Argus and Dark Green Fritillary which we had gone to see. There were also lots of Small Heath and Skipper and Common Blue along with Brown Argus too.
We also came across this shrew on the walk back to the car, cute little chap.

When the rain finally stopped at Saltholme reserve there was a prowler in the car park, checking out all the cars. The resident fox was sniffing around looking for food and not at all bothered about us being there. The young swallows were sitting being fed by their parents in the evening sunshine. Not a lot else around but a nice end to a wet day and finished off by a delicious meal at the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge. If you have not been I can highly recommend it.

Butterflies are a bit thin on the ground at the moment due to this delightful weather but at least the other evening we managed to locate a few Grayling at Dormans Pool. We also managed to locate yet another Little Owl not far from home. Wish it was as easy to see a Tawny Owl!

We decided to go west yesterday to one of our favourite spots, Smardale Gill and the Viaduct. It is always a really good walk for spotting butterflies. It was a reasonably good day, no wind, warm and sunny intervals. We could not believe the lack of butterflies however. Apart from Ringlets the only others of note were a couple of Common Blue and what we think may be a Brown Argus but need clarification on that one. We spotted a Red Squirrel in its drey and a really obliging Common Lizard, and apart from that on the wildlife front it was very quiet although plenty of orchids about. Called in to see if our local Little Owl was there and sure enough he was.

It was a lovely warm day yesterday but we were suprised how few butterflies there were about. Only saw a few whites, Red Admiral and Small Heath. We deceided to have a run out to the Wildlife Watchpoint at Wykeham but as we did not set off until well into the afternoon and stopping off lots on the way we didn't arrive until early evening. There was nothing from the raptor viewpoint apart from Crossbills flying around but we did see what we were sure was a Goshawk as we were driving through the forest. The road along by the Nursery produced excellent views of three young Green Woodpeckers and we had an excellent view of 1 Turtle Dove which flew just as we were about to get a photo. Could hear it again but could not locate it. It was a lovely evening and a lovely day.

Had a visit to Nosterfield whilst out and about on Saturday afternoon. Located two Black-Necked Grebes which were nice to see again. We watched them for some time as it was very quiet there and they seemed quite settled and happy on the water. Also saw 2 Avocet, Common Sandpiper and Little Ringed Plover.

I am obviously talking about last nigh - Tuesday as tonight we were walking around Teesside Park in the pouring rain. We went out armed with our picnic to Snilesworth up on the moors to see what was around and to see if the Spotted Flycatchers had arrived and we were pleased to find they had. It was a beautiful evening, sunny, still and warm. The Redstarts were along the roadside on the fences, there were young nuthatches and a treecreeper and we saw our first Jay in this location as well. There were yound Robins and either Marsh or Willow Tits (have to admit we are not sure which), curlews and Red Legged Partridge but we could not locate the Pied Flycatchers which we presume must have fledged and possibly moved on.

Had a lovely relaxing week staying in a shieling at the campsite at Craignure, would thoroughly recommend a holiday there, it is so quiet and clean and tidy. The weather was mixed and the birdwatching fairly quiet and we just missed the Sabines Gulls and Red Necked Phalarope.

After failing miserably yesterday evening in failing to see the White Throated Robin, as we were not prepared to climb the ladder to peer over the wall, we managed to view it this evening even though the conditions at the time were far from good. Access into the garden had been arranged and although we only had 15 mins before Sylvia had to be back at school to a meeting we managed to see it. The rain poured down but the bird still performed for all who watched. It was much more civilised than the previous evening, which in its own right was quite entertaining to watch - the people rather than the bird.

Mick was not too good today so we had a run to Crimden Dene and a walk along the beach for an houe to get some fresh air. There were lots of Little Tern around and the odd Dunlin and Sanderling along the tide line. On the way back we had a run along the Zinc Works Road and spotted this fox just sitting alongside the Power Station fencline.

On Wednesday a trip on to our moors got us views of Curlew and chicks and excellent views of a Woodcock. Thursday at Dormans gave us views of Marsh Harrier (light was poor so pictures very poor) and at Zinc Works rd. a Roe deer was very obliging

Went for a walk yesterday on the moors and came across a pair of Pied Flycatchers. They were busy collecting food and taking it to the nest box so presumably feeding young. There was also a young Willow Warbler being fed by its parent.

Wasn't sure what to do today as the weather forcast was not too good so decided to have a run over to Helmsley so that if it did rain as it said at least we could look around the shops. As it turned out though the weather was fine and there were hardly any people at all there when we arrived, it was lovely. We went looking on the stream through the village for the Dipper and located a juvenille which very obligingly just sat there whilst we took its photo. It was shortly joined by a family of Grey Wagtail and by this time the sun had come out and it was very warm. It was at this point we received the phone call from a friend to say there was a Stone Curlew at Haverton Hill - a bird on our list to see. We decided not to rush home but just go and see it whenever we go back which we did and got excellent, but distant views of the bird around 8pm. It was well worth the visit and a life tick for us.

It was such a lovely evening that we decided to make up a picnic and go up onto the moors. We stopped off first at Cod Beck Reservoir hoping to see the cuckoo and whinchat as last year and we were not disappointed. As soon as we approached the car park we spotted a male cuckoo perched in a small tree. It then began to sing before it flew off. It was not long before we located it again, not too far away on the other side of the beck, this time with its mate. We didn't however manage to see a Whinchat, but who knows maybe next time. We couldn't resist fish and chips from the fish shop in Osmotherley and went up onto the moor to enjoy them in the evening sunshine.

Had a good few sightings in the past few days. Had our first House Martins and a very obliging Garganey at Margrove Ponds and today heard a Nightingale singing at Cowpen Bewley Country Park with a very fleeting glimpse but hearing the song was good enough. We had a run across towards Richmond and Reeth and along the river near the Stang and had Dipper, Redstart and Pied Flycatcher it was a lovely clear, sunny day once you got out of the wind.

Last week went so quick and back to work now for some of us although Mick is not able to go as he now has shingles and is not very well at all. He looks 'terrible' to say the least. Hope he gets better soon so we can go out and about again. Keep wishing I could be a wildlife guide instead of a Teaching Assistant, not that I don't enjoy my job because I do but I would rather be the other more.

We did manage to go out early in the weekend and found lots of Green Hairstreak on the moors around Reeth, the most we have seen together so far.

Well the weather has been fantastic for this time of year so have tried to spend as much time out of doors as we could. We went to Bempton on Sunday which was a super day although we only managed to see two Puffins on the sea. Plenty of other birds around though along with a shore lark and Yellow Wagtail in the fields. Around the local area there are plenty of Redstart, Whitethroats and lots of warblers including a very vocal Grasshopper Warbler which we sat and watched yesterday for about 15 mins, just singing its head off.

Found it difficult to get connected to the internet whilst away so will post a few photos now I have returned home. It was a brilliant weeks holiday, met some really friendly people, the guide - Dave Pullan, found us some excellent birds and the weather was excellent. Can thoroughly recommend a holiday with Heatherlea especially for me as I was waited on hand and foot.

My favourite bird was the Crested Tit, although it was difficult to locate but managed it in the end. Next I have to say was the spectacular Capercaille which was brilliant to watch. The only bird we were unable to locate was the Ptarmigan which was not through the lack of trying. We climbed Cairngorm on the Thursday and could not have asked for a better day weather wise, it was actually very warm, especially when you have put so many clothes on thinnking it may be cold. The only bird we did see towards the top was a Ring Ouzle. I can't wait to go back to that area again especially to visit the coastal area of Speyside Bay.

Managed to get connected onto the internet here at the hotel but do not know how long it will last so here goes. Having a fabulous holiday but would rather not be on my own, wish the family were here too. If you are reading this I am missing you.

It is brilliant up here at Nethey Bridge - Heatherlea although non stop.

Seen Crested Tit although yet to get a photo. The Slavonian Grebe look stunning in summer plumage and there seem to be Osprey everywhere.

The Pine Marten trip was in a stunning location and the highlight of my holiday so far although I am sure there is more to come especially if we manage to get up the mountains - weather permitting.

Also had a cuckoo today, heard but not seen at Kingairloch.

Sylvia called tonight to tell me about the brilliant day she has had with views of Black Grouse, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle and Pine Martin. Can't wait to see some of the pictures she has taken - although she can't access the blog as the wireless Internet signal where she is staying is a bit hit and miss.

As for me well...............I got stuck in a traffic jam for 1/2hr at Saltholme this morning, got soaked at lunch time when the heavens opened, but I did manage to see several different Warblers (Cetti's, Sedge,Grasshopper,and Reed) amongst a few other species today.

So I was left to check out the local area, managed 3 year ticks - Blackcap at Weary bank Swallow at Sleddale and 10 Ring Ouzel at Little Kildale, even had one close by in a tree. (Sylvia will be annoyed if she has missed out on these). Plenty of Medow pipits , Wheatear, Chiffcaff and Willow warblers around today.

On Sunday we had a trip over to South Lakes and visited Sizergh Castle to try and see the Hawfinch but not much luck there although it was a lovely place to visit and will definately go back in the near future. We then decided to visit the South Lakes Animal Park and had a pleasant walk around there in beautiful sunshine. I do feel sorry however for the Guy on whose head the bird landed!!

Tried to take some photos today of the Sandmartins which have just returned but it is so difficult as they fly so quickly. It is lovely to hear so many Chiffchaffs again this year and they seem to be everywhere. We had a trip over to Hawnby and had tea there in the local tea room, sitting outside in the late afternoon sunshine, it was so relaxing and pleasant.

It was so cold in the hide at Scaling Dam this afternoon, especially after the warm days we had through the week. Outside the hide in the chill wind was a Little Ringed Plover, two Ringed Plover and a Dunlin along with quite a few Meadow Pipits. The Wood Duck remained asleep directly opposite the hide on the far bank all the time we were there and two Pink Footed Geese flew in with some Greylags and proceeded to swim directly in front of the hide. At first we thought from a distance one was the Bean Goose which had been reported but both had pink on the beaks and both definately had pink legs. On the way up to Scaling when passing through Danby there were literally hundreds of Winter thruses massing in the trees near the Moors Centre. We also saw a Wheatear at Sleddale along with more Winter thruhes in the wood at the cattle grid.

Can't stay in when the weather is good so have been going out all this week on early evening walks as soon as we come in from work to enjoy the last of the sunshine. Went down to the river at Neasham tonight and saw three female and one male Goosander on the river there. Heard a Chiffchaff singing and a Tawny Owl at very close quarters but could not locate it in someones back garden. We were amazed at the number of bats flying in Neasham and along the road between Neasham and Hurworth as the sun went down. The daffodils looked stunning in the sunset.

Well,actually mowed the back lawn today - it now smells like spring in the garden. Went to the local garden centre to get some new plants for the window boxes and then had a run down to RSPB Saltholme to see our first Wheatear of the year, a lovely male at that. Had a run up to Dormans Pool which was very quiet apart from a weasel which provided much entertainment as it ran backwards and forwards between the rocks at the edge of the roadway. The track has been filled in and is now greatly improved if you haven't been along there of late. Also there was a pair of Stonechat collecting nesting material so at least they have survived the harsh winter.

Today showed signs that spring is nearly with us. Went for a walk around Swainby while Sylvia was Horse riding and caught up with my first Chiffchaff of the year, Bullfinch were stripping the new buds from the trees and the sun was shining! also heard couple of Tawny Owls on my walk and saw 4 Buzzards circling over Whorl hill.

Afternoon saw us heading up to the Stang forest where the Crossbills were still easily found, with a flock of Redpoll and Siskin. 9 Black Grouse were also in the area.

It doesn't get any better, the guided walk this morning was wet and cold with very few, if any birds of note about. It was good however to meet new people and although we got wet and cold it was an enjoyable morning. There were 10 Avocet from the bus stop hide, plenty of Shelduck and Redshank and a Pintail in the pools along the Long Drag along with a fox and some Roe Deer.

3 Pink Footed Geese were still in the fields along Belasis Ave.

After drying out at home and doing some shopping the sun eventually came out later in the afternoon so we decided to go for a run out to Osmotherly. We stopped for coffee up by Chequers where we have previously seen a Green Woodpecker and sure enough after a while it appeared. There were lots of Lapwing and Curlew around and a flock of Chaffinch with a Brambling present. Although it was cold it was a lovely end to the day.

As I was on my way out to horseriding this morning and about to lock the back door I heard that unmistakable 'trilling'. I looked round to see about 50 Waxwings sitting in the tree at the other side of our fence, I could not believe it. I ran to shout Mick (who was still in bed) and we managed to get some photos before I had to go to the garage which frightened them off. They flew across to the field along with another flock of about 50 which must have been in the trees further along the road. It was a good start to the day and probably the last we will see of them until next Winter. Went to my favourite place - Helmsley later in the day and had a run along the road to Mardale. We saw two Buzzards, a Merlin sitting on a fence but too far away for photos. The Lapwings were back on territory on the moor along with a few curlew and there were lots of Hares in the fields on the way back. Also spotted a flock of Redwing presumably getting ready to head home too.

We are leading a guided walk tomorrow down at Greatham Creek, Seal Sands so hope somebody turns up and hope there is something to see, although at least the Avocets are back so we will be able to see them.

What a beautiful day today was, not a cloud in the clear blue sky made walking along Smardale Gill almost perfect. We saw Red Squirrel, Raven, Buzzards, Nuthatch, G.S.Woodpecker and thoroughly enjoyed the stunning scenery. We took Becca's dog Ellie who also enjoyed the walk. We saw our first sign of spring, primroses and could imagine the spring migrants like the chiffchaff singing at any time soon.

Decided to go over the moors again today but this time stayed on North Yorks side. Had two buzzards circling over Little Kildale and later in the day three near Scaling Dam. We stopped at the cattle grid near the chevrons at Sleddale and had this stunning Sparrowhawk land right in front of the car on the gate. Unfortunately we had to sit really still and could only manage to get photos through the windscreen, it sat for a couple of mins. before flying on over the moor. Also in the wood here were at least three Treecreeper and a small flock of blue and coal tits. I think this treecreeper sat rigid whilst the Sparrowhawk was around! We went on over the moors to Scaling Dam where we had good views of the Slavonian Grebe but the light was not too good for any decent shots. Can't wait to go on the holiday I won to Heatherlea, Nethy Bridge in Scotland and hopefully see some on their home turf so to speak. Only 5 weeks till I go, don't know what Mick will do while I am away, am sure he will manage!!

At least the Little Owl have survived the winter and are all still at their usual haunts, we caught up with this one on the way back near Sexhow, Hutton Rudby.

11.10pm - just been out feeding ham to our local estate fox who proceeded to bury some of it in the neighbours border! Good job they did not see me.

Have not done as much as I would have liked this week what with the weather and visiting hospital but have managed to get out and about today. Decided to have a run over to The Stang Forest and Tan Hill today and visit as many sites on route as possible. Checked out some smaller ponds on the way including Smallways Lake on the A66 which had good numbers of ducks and geese including a single Bean Goose.

Stopped for lunch in the Stang where we managed to see a flock of Siskin and 5 Crossbill including a very colourful male. We also saw a large raptor which we are sure was a Goshawk. Further up the road at Shaw Farm we had 12 Black Grouse, a large flock of winter thrushes and Golden Plover. As we approached Tan Hill Pub we saw a raptor soaring over the moor which turned out to be a female Hen Harrier and further along the road two Raven and two Skylark.

On the way home we also managed to see two Little Owl sitting together near Hurworth in Darlington.

Got up early today, made a picnic and headed over the Pennines to the Lake District. The weather was cold and visibility not too good but we had a really good day. Had a walk around the lake at Grasmere before heading off to Ambleside and then onto Windermere. The only birds of note were lots of Goosander on most lakes, Goldeneye, Nuthatch and a Yellow Legged Gull at Bowness.

Well it has been weeks since we have posted anything on our blog but hopefully this is about to change. What with the weather and having to rely on weekends to get out and about things have not been too good of late. Sylvia is now on a weeks holiday and weather permitting she may get out and about and get some half decent photos. In the meantime you will have to make do with what's here. We have not even been able to catch up with the Green Winged Teal at Bowesfield but it isn't that we haven't tried. We did however manage to see three buzzards today on our travels. One at Crathorne and two circling above woodland near Carlton In Cleveland, all three just outside our area in North Yorkshire. We also caught up with at least 100 waxwing in Thornaby but the weather was too dull and dreary for any photos.

Thought we had better report today even though our photographs are not good quality as the light was poor. We had a run over the moors and on to Scaling Dam and Lockwood Beck, it was pretty quiet on the moors with only Red Grouse and one Peregrine size Raptor, which we are unsure about. Scaling Dam was better with a large flock of Greylag on our arrival with one Bean Goose with them. They didn't stay put long before they were off. Lots of Teal with some Widgeon and displaying Goldeneye. At the feeders a G.S. Woodpecker put in an appearance with a Green Woodpecker flying across fields on the other side of the water. Other birds on the feeders included a Willow Tit, lots of Blue Tits along with L.T. Tits, Gt. Tit, Greenfinch, Dunnock , Blackbird and Robin. We also managed to see the Red Crested Pochard at Lockwood Beck on the way back. Our last sighting of the day was our local Buzzard perched in a tree just near Crathorne Village not far from Cleveland.

Trying to get a few of the more common birds added onto our new year list and managed a few of the not so common birds today as well. Not been feeling too good of late so just went for a walk around Hartlepool Headland to blow the cobwebs off and it was a bit chilly. Came across a Golden Plover on Parton Rocks along with quite a few Knot, Oystercatcher, Turnstone and Purple Sandpiper. A couple of Red Throated Diver at sea along with a porpoise and several Great Crested Grebe. A common Scoter was in the shelter of the Heugh Pier with several Eider and there was a dead seal on the beach there. We eventually managed to view the Red Necked Grebe from the battery. Called into Dormans Pool on the way home and saw the Ring Necked Duck.

Went over the moors today and on to Helmsley for a coffee. It was pretty dull but managed to see two Dipper whilst walking around. The second being very obliging and managed to get some pretty decent photos from the car as it pottered about in the stream in the village. It was the first time we have ever sat and watched a Dipper at such close quarters and even sat listening to it singing its head off which is the first time we have ever actually heard a Dipper sing. Well the Redwings that have infiltrated our close and front garden finally made it into our small back garden which has a pyracantha loaded with berries. At one point this morning we had at least 15 of them either foraging around in the leaves in the front borders or on the bush in the back. It was a brilliant sight along with the mistle thrush which we had also today. This afternoon we had a run across to Sledale which was pretty bleak and devoid of any sort of life. This evening we watched the film 'Furry Vengenance' which was really funny if you have not yet seen it and another film I can thoroughly recommend is 'The Nativity' which again is also a great laugh and a must for anyone who works in a school. We definately need to improve our nativity performances at school from now on!

Went for a walk to Saltholme today in the bitterly cold wind to try and catch up with the Bittern but failed dismally. There were a couple of Brambling feeding on the fruit outside the centre and a G.S. Woodpecker along with two Water Rail showing very well at the Wildlife Watchpoint. Along the Zinc Works road there were 3 Woodcock feeding along the fence by the stream although by this time the light was beginning to fade otherwise the shots would have been excellent. Yesterday we went for a walk with Ellie in her new Christmas coat around Coatham Stobb but it was very quiet apart from a lone Fox.

Wishing everyone who reads our blog a very Merry Christmas. Tried all day to get some good shots of the Robin as it came to feed on dried mealworms and get drinks from our water barrell, which is surprisingly still flowing, but was disappointed at the results but have posted some anyway. When I was out shopping today bought some live maggots for him to enjoy for his Xmas dinner tomorrow. Hope he appreciates the efforts I went to to get them. Also had some Redwings in our shrubs and trees today which is a first for our garden. I have watched them over the past couple of days strip the trees at the end of our close bare of berries and they will probably move on now. Anyway going to prepare my vegetables now and get ready for tomorrow or should I say today as it is already midnight.

Decided to go to Saltholme today for a walk in the winter sunshine. There seemed to be Redwings everywhere from the minute we stepped out of the house. A few Waxwings were once again in the trees opposite our home on Upsall Grove in Fairfield. Plenty of Fieldfares and Redwings at Saltholme too along with a single Waxwing near the Bottom Tank. Two Water Rail were giving excellent views at the Wildlife Watchpoint and a Long Eared Owl giving excellent views also on the reserve. We then went on an owl hunt on the way home but only managed one other species, that being a Little Owl or should I say three in West Stockton at a very reliable site.

We had a run up to Sutton Bank Visitor Centre which was very quiet in deed but plenty of snow around the centre, and plenty of small birds at the feeding station including at least 2 Brambling, it was very picturesque. Travelling from there down to Helmsley we came across a buzzard feeding on what we think was a stoat. Also nearby was a huge flock of birds which we could not identify as we could not find anywhere to stop but were small finch like birds of which there were hundreds. Did some shopping in Helmsley which was also very quiet and then drove back via Chop Gate which was a lovely run through the snow fields. All in all a very pleasant day out.

Well we are getting a bit sick of this weather now. Wouldn't mind if the roads were clear, my school was closed - but it must be one of the only schools in the country still open, and I could go out birdwatching, but unfortunately I can't. We have had Waxwings in the school playground which I watch and show the children when we are out at playtime, they have been around for most of the week. Looking forward to the weekend when we can get out and about.

Had a quick run over to Hartlepool marina to catch up with the Red-necked Grebe which was keeping it's distance. On the way back home we had a call from David to say there was 20 Waxwings in our close, just as we came across 3 Waxwings at Port Clarence. Later in the day came across loads of winter Thrushes feeding on Berries just near Chop Gate.

Went on the guided walk organised by Teesmouth Bird Club this morning and had a very pleasant walk around the Valley Gardens in Saltburn. Chiffchaff, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Blackcap, Sparrowhawk, Grey Wagtail and Dipper present along with the more common woodland species. A couple of Red Throated Diver present on the sea and a small group of sanderling on the tideline. Later on in the morning two Razorbill on the sea. Later in the day we had a run up to Sleddale and caught up with a flock of Waxwings on the railway line just before Kildale. We didn't see the Rough Legged Buzzard so we will have a run up again in the morning. We did however enjoy our coffee and cakes at the bakery in Danby.

Just come back from a week on Mull and We wish we could have stayed there forever. To get up on a morning and look out of the kitchen window and see the mountains and water with otters swimming in the sea and Sea Eagles flying trying to pick up a goose or two for their breakfast is so much better than looking out onto a close full of cars!! Even the people there relate to you as though they have known you forever and are so kind and helpful and make you feel wanted whereas some people here rush around and haven't even got the time to say hello. Anyway enough of the moaning. We had an excellent week with mixed weather but we really had a brilliant time and very relaxing. We had two otters by the cottage each morning and a pair of Sea Eagles there most days, the best view was the day we were coming home when one of the eagles tried to take a Greylag Goose right outside on the shoreline, it failed but we had excellent views (apart from Mick who was in the shower at the time and couldn't get out quick enough) the cameras were packed up in the car so by the time we managed to get them the shots we got were not so brilliant. There were Waxwings on the island and we had a group fly by one day but we failed to locate them after that however on the way home we visited the Red Kite Centre at Argaty again and found a flock of over 200 feeding in Doune and had excellent views. Can't wait to go back to Mull again as soon as possible.

After sleeping in this morning and arriving at school later than usual I had a busy day and got home about 5pm pretty tired. No sooner had I got through the door and I was told "have to hurry, a Red Eyed Vireo is at North Gare. We jumped straight in the car and shot down to Seaton Carew. We were not sure exactly where the bird would be located so were hoping to see other birders to give us a clue. We had no sooner pulled up in the car park when Mick's phone went off, his friend informing him that a Hoopoe had been seen at South Gare!! We made the decision to try and find that as we thought it probably easier to locate than the R.E. Vireo so off we shot. Upon arriving at South Gare we were told the bird had not been seen for about 30mins and it was not found whilst we were there up until dark. Good luck to anyone who finds it tomorrow.
Not sure what all this travelling around looking for birds is doing for our 'Carbon Footprint' though but it is probably keeping the transporter bridge in business!

No photos of anything for the last couple of days as even the Red-flanked Bluetail at Saltburn was seen but not close enough for a usable picture, so we've put some more Shrike pic's on.

Well Mick abandoned me this morning to go looking for the Great Grey Shrike so I had to go horse riding on my own. On my return at lunchtime we went back to South Gare to see if we could locate the birds he had seen on the morning and we did. There seemed to be birds everywhere. Managed to locate the GG Shrike and the Red Breasted Flycatcher without too much trouble. There were Redwings and Fieldfare, Redstarts, Brambling, Blackcaps, Robins and Goldcrests galore, Song Thrush, Chiffchaff and Willow Warblers and Weatear and a Red Throated diver was in the bay.

Went for a ride out in the car in the early evening sun. Wish the nights didn't get dark so early. Did manage however to find a little owl near Aislaby, Yarm
